Less than an hour from Monterrey is a magical town with one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area. Do you want to know how to visit Cola de Caballo and what to do around it? We give you the best tips.
First things first. The route: our recommendation is to leave early in the morning to make the most of the day. Take the Monterrey – Santiago highway (number 85) to the exit at Cola de Caballo – Nuevo Leon 20.
1. Hike to the Cola de Caballo waterfall
Once there you will undoubtedly be amazed by the beautiful vegetation around you. The municipality of Villa de Santiago is on the Sierra Madre Oriental, so the landscape is as Verde as you can imagine and more, with an important diversity of flora and fauna.
Reaching the waterfall takes little time: you will have to walk a little more than 500 meters, but if you prefer, you can also get there on horseback or by wagon.
Enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Cola de Caballo and after admiring this 27-meter high waterfall, whose name you will understand as soon as you get close, go up to the lookout point for a panoramic view.
Inside the ecotourism park you will find handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as some extreme sports options, such as the roller zip, a zip line with curves, and the highest bungee jump in all of Mexico, at 70 meters high. There are also barbecue grills and camping space.
Stroll and eat in Santiago Village
This magical little town has a lot of charm. Walk through its cobblestone streets and pass by its most emblematic buildings, such as the Church of Santiago Apostle, the Museum of History, the House of Art and Culture and the lookout point.
A few minutes from downtown is the Presa de la Boca, a body of water surrounded by mountains, perfect for relaxing. Take the opportunity to take a look around and if you’re craving one of the riverside restaurants, jump in with confidence.
Otherwise, in the village you will also find good regional food options, such as El Zaguán, Merendero Tino Santiago ( a little further away) or La Jarrita. If you prefer something more international, opt for L’Anfora Ristorante Italiano.
Continue to enjoy the Zone
If you were left with extra energy, you have several options. One of them is to continue exploring the nature of the Zone. For this we recommend the Matacanes Canyon, one of the most beautiful in the country, with slides, waterfalls, pools, waterfalls, caves and more. Although for this you will need an additional day.
If this is the case, our recommendation is to spend the night in a small hotel nearby, such as the Gemma Rincón de Santiago, which is boutique and its pool could not have a better view, as it overlooks the dam.
Another option if you have less time is the Cave of the Bats, where you can see hundreds of these animals flying at sunset. Now, if you prefer to test your adrenaline, try the go karts of Santiago Racing Track or the hot air balloons of Cielo Mágico.
