If you’re looking for a unique family outing, this weekend Nuevo León will host an experience that combines illustration, storytelling, and Japanese tradition. It’s the 10th International Kamishibai Charhaku Festival, an event dedicated to kamishibai—a storytelling tradition originating in Japan that uses illustrated panels to bring imaginative tales to life.
Over the course of two days, national and international storytellers will present traditional and contemporary stories that will transport the audience to different worlds through words and images. The festival will bring together talents from Japan, Costa Rica, and Mexico in performances designed for all ages.
Two venues to enjoy the magic of kamishibai
The first event will take place on Saturday, July 4, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Mexican History. Pepe Coti, Guita Cuentacuentos, Ethan Joshua, and Grace Mackay will participate, sharing different stories using this Japanese technique that has captivated audiences around the world.
The celebration will continue on Sunday, July 5, with the festival’s closing ceremony at Rufino Tamayo Park in San Pedro Garza García. This special presentation will feature Ganchan (Noriki Iwahashi) from Japan, along with Pepe Coti, Tere Farfán, Guita Cuentacuentos, Ethan Joshua, Luis de la Cruz, and Etery Treviño.

Kamishibai, known as “paper theater, ” originated in Japan and is characterized by its combination of illustrations and oral storytelling. This tradition allows each story to come to life in a unique way, creating an immersive experience for young and old alike.
The 10th International Kamishibai Charhaku Festival aims to bring this art form to new audiences through accessible performances and cultural activities that promote imagination, reading, and community engagement.
