It’s official: the 2025–2026 school calendar will remain unchanged. After several days of discussion regarding a possible early end to the school year, the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) confirmed that the original dates will remain in effect for students and teachers across the country.
The proposal to move up the end of the school year arose as a measure to avoid disruptions caused by the 2026 World Cup and the high temperatures recorded during the summer. In fact, the SEP had proposed ending classes as early as Friday, June 5, 2026.
However, the initiative sparked immediate reactions among teachers, parents, state governments, and organizations such as the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), who pointed out potential academic and administrative impacts.
After holding roundtable discussions and reviewing the proposal, education authorities decided to keep the 2025–2026 school calendar as originally planned.
These are the official dates for the 2025-2026 school calendar
With the final decision, the school year will end and begin on the dates that were already established at the start of the official calendar.
The confirmed dates are:
- End of the 2025-2026 school year: Wednesday, July 15, 2026
- Start of the 2026-2027 school year: Monday , August 31, 2026
This means that summer vacation will last approximately six weeks for students and teaching staff.
The decision was unanimously approved during a meeting held on Monday, May 11, 2026, among SEP officials.
Why did they want to change the 2025-2026 school calendar?
The SEP explained that the adjustment sought to avoid conflicts with activities related to the 2026 World Cup and to reduce students’ exposure to extreme heat during June and July.
Although the 2025–2026 school calendar ultimately remained unchanged, the debate reignited the conversation about the country’s educational conditions, as well as the need to consider the climate and possible future adjustments during periods of high temperatures.
