Art lovers have reason to be excited. In 2028 , the Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO) could host the renowned Gelman Santander Collection, one of the most important private collections of Mexican art , featuring works by artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and María Izquierdo.
The news has generated great anticipation because the collection brings together 68 works by some of the most iconic figures in Mexican art. Before returning to Mexico, the collection will tour museums in Spain, Switzerland, and Norway, following the conclusion of its exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.
No agreement has yet been signed for the collection to come to Monterrey
Although it was initially reported that the collection would be at MARCO in 2028, the museum’s director, Taiyana Pimentel, clarified that there is no formal agreement at this time.
According to the director, both parties have expressed interest in having the exhibition presented in Monterrey once the collection returns to the country. However, she explained that no document has been signed and no definitive agreement has been reached, so it is not yet confirmed whether the same set of works will be exhibited or a different curatorial proposal will be presented.
Excitement is running high. The Gelman Collection is considered one of the most important collections of Mexican art and recently became one of the most-visited exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art.
In addition, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) will oversee the temporary removal of the works and their return to Mexico, with the aim of ensuring that this important artistic heritage is once again presented to the Mexican public in accordance with current legislation.
For now, bringing the Gelman Collection to Monterrey remains a promising project, butit is still in the planning stages. If it comes to fruition, the city could host one of the most significant exhibitions of Mexican art in the coming years.
